Has anybody used and gained much from corresponding with others as pen pals on a language exchange basis?

Question by John A: Has anybody used and gained much from corresponding with others as pen pals on a language exchange basis?
It seems like such a good way to meet new people and learn to write a language, but I need to know the pros and cons of doing this activity.

I should mention that I am a 50 year old man so of course young people are out of the question.
