Q&A: American literature for Asian language exchange partners?

Question by Ninja MidgetChan™: American literature for Asian language exchange partners?
I have a couple of language exchange buddies from China; they are adults, and will graduate college pretty soon. As a gift, I'm thinking about giving them American literature.

What books would you recommend? Are English classics good? If so, which books are good? Please do not include books written in Anglo-Saxon (Old English), unless if there is a reason why books in Anglo-Saxton
